About Chorus

Lúčnica Chorus has belonged to the Lúčnica Artistic Ensemble since its origination in 1948. It boasts its mature singing technique, voice culture and typical sound. Its performances are highly valued by the expert critics and hugely successful with a wide audience. Some of the opera stars started their artistic career here – Edita Gruberová, Lucia Popp, Magdaléna Blahušiaková, Ľubica Orgonášová, Marta Beňačková, Štefan Babjak, Ondrej Malachovský and many others who later enjoyed great successes on the world opera stages.

Lúčnica Chorus has acquired the highest awards at the international singing competitions in the cities of Llangollen, Arezzo, Middlesbrough, Montreux, Gorizia, La Valletta, Maribor, Tours, Oskarshamn, Bergen, St. Petersburg and Assisi. It became the darling of the audience at international choral festivals as well as on concert tours in China, USA, South Korea, Argentina, Jordan, Israel, Venezuela, Taiwan, Mexico, as well as in the majority of the European states.

The rich repertory of the Lúčnica Chorus comprises a cappella works of all stylistic periods from Renaissance to contemporary Slovak music. The choir performs pieces of various genres – sacred works, secular music, choral arrangements of popular pieces and gospels, but primarily it performs older as well as newer pieces inspired by Slovak folk song. Besides it continuously widens its repertory in vocal-instrumental works collaborating with renowned Slovak and foreign music ensembles, conductors and soloists. Apart from concert activities the choir regularly records for several music record labels. It also works on film music recordings for eminent domestic and international cinematographic productions.

The past choirmasters of  the singing  chorus were Štefan Klimo, Peter Hradil and Marián Vach. Elena Matušová has been its artistic leader and choirmaster since 2003.
