The Lúčnica Chorus Bratislava

The Lúčnica Chorus is a part of the artistic ensemble Lúčnica. Over many decades of its existence (it was established in the year 1948) the chorus performed in many countries of Europe, America, Africa and Asia. It is known for its advanced singing technique as well as for the vocal culture. The chorus is characterized by a typical cleanliness of style, manifold dramaturgy, unique musical feeling and wide expression register, intensified by choreographic and deportment performance. Concerts presenting folklore repertoir contributes to the auditory impression also with the help of a visual one, namely by performing in the colorful national costumes.

The performances of this outstanding amateur chorus are highly valued by the professional critique’s demanding criteria and are responded to by a great interest and success among audiences. These qualities have acquired esteem at many domestic and foreign competitions such as in Llangollen, Arezzo, Middlesbrough, Montreux, Gorizia, Tours, Oskarhamn, La Valetta, Maribor, Bergen where the chorus has won the first prizes and other awards. The performances at the international festivals in New York, Seoul, Barcelona, Mar del Plata, Amman and Jerusalem have been successful, too.

The Lúčnica chorus interprets compositions of all musical genres - classical chorus works, sacral works, contemporary choir music, variations on Slovak and other national folklore songs and popular chorus compositions. It cooperates with several well known Slovak orchestras, introducing various vocal-instrumental works, such as masses (J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, L. Cherubini, J. Haydn, A. Ll. Webber, J. J. Ryba), oratories (J. S. Bach, P. McCartney) and concert versions of operas (V.Bellini, S. Mercadante, J. Offenbach, G. Donizetti, A. Ponchielli).

On the position of the principal conductor has first operated the founder of the chorus Dr. Štefan Klimo (1919-2000), leading Lúčnica in the years 1948-1983. In the years 1983-1998 the position has been performed by Prof. Peter Hradil (1940-2001), who has later been followed by Marián Vach, the artistic and principal conductor of the chorus in the years 1998-2003. This conductor has cooperated with Elena Matušová, the conductress who became the principal conductress in the beginning of the 2003/2004 season and has influenced the chorus long ago.
